Mini Reviews - The Incredible Hulk

The Incredible Hulk

The Incredible Hulk

Much much better than the overly ambitious and overly artistic Ang Lee's Hulk. I mean why would you want a complex and very emotional film of a giant green man? Hulk is just basically HULK-SMASH! And this film got it right with the comic series. And it isn't dumbed down to the point of insult. The film gives a simple, yet engaging story, interesting characters and plenty of great action scenes. And The Hulk design is thankfully not cartoonish. This should have been the Hulk movie instead of Ang Lee's and what should be officially cannoned for everyone. No disrespect to the great Ang Lee, but even he has an embarrassing piece not worth mentioning.

Star Trek Review

Its strange how one Star Trek prequel is better than all three Star Wars prequels

I'm not in any way a Star Trek fan or even a sci-fi geek. I couldn't care less about complex and brainy facts and knowledges that goes into any sci-fi series' storyline. Granted I'm being able to follow the storyline of Lost, but I'm too lazy for anything like Battlestar Galactica or even Star Trek. Not to say that I don't know absolutely anything of Star Trek. I have seen some of all five series (Original, NG, DS9, Voyager and Enterprise) and gotten to know the characters inhabited in the series, mostly in the original and NG series. But everyone knows of Kirk, Spock, Uhura, Sulu, "Bones" McCoy and Scotty... and maybe Chehov. Though Star Trek have been pretty much dead for a couple of years, its probably time the series have to be reinvigorated and refreshed. All in the hands of Lost creator, J.J Abram.

Before I went to see the movie, I decided to prepare myself of Star Trek knowledge and insisted in watching what considers to be the best Star Trek movie and one of the most loved sci-fi movies, which is Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Every geek talks of this film and is been viewed as kind of a cult classic, with some moments that are memorable and parodied to death such as Shatner screaming "KKKKHHAANNNN!!!". And even though I'm not a huge Star Trek huge, Wrath of Khan was great to watch. As a film itself, it was entertaining and enjoyable with a story that is easy to follow. And there was some cool and even sad moments as well. It was the essential Star Trek movie to get into the entire series. I said to myself "I will be glad if the new Star Trek movie is like The Wrath of Khan". And sure enough, the 2009 Star Trek movie was like that. And I'm glad I watched Wrath of Khan before this because there are some elements from that movie and taken into this new Star Trek film.

Since I'm not a total Star Trek fan, I wouldn't have to worry about the entire continuity of the series. But hardcore fans can rest easy because that factor have been resolved in probably the most smartest way, in a solution where the director cheats his way into creative liberty (the same way Kirk cheats in his Kobayashi Maru test :P) This is not much a spoiler, so I'm gonna tell that the movie deals with time travel and alternate reality (kinda like Lost) and that move gives a refreshing reboot just like for Batman Begins. You have given a whole new storyline and timeline of the Star Trek universe and yet it still feels like Star Trek. The characters remain intact with the original predecessor with an added youth and edginess to them, even when the new Kirk (Chris Pine) gives that Shatner-esque impression. The move of have an alternate reality is genius to me because of many things. You can cheat in giving out details that aren't true to the original continuity and promise the fans new stories and adventures with the newly-casted original characters. Hell, if there is a new Star Trek TV series with the new cast and produced by J.J Abram, I would gladly watch it.

Its pretty much hard to ignore Simon Pegg...

In the film, Romulan miner-turned-badguy, Nero (Eric f*ckin Bana) is very much pissed off that his home planet was destroyed by a supernova and his wife and his unborn child were killed along with it, all because the original Spock (Leonard Nimoy) didn't get to save his planet in time. This led to both Spock and Nero's ship to be catapulted into the past to the point where young Kirk was born after his father was killed by Nero's ship. The film then chronicles the young and rising years of both the rebellious Kirk and the tormented Spock as they are enlisted in Star Fleet Federation and boarded upon the Starship Enterprise.

Its a good thing that J.J Abram took a course from the reboot series of Battlestar Galactica because every shot in space is spectacular. The use of shaky-cam and zoom-ins makes it as raw and edgy and even as epic as space itself. Its not like its predecessors where it is a plastic model floating through a canvas, but it looks like there is literally a spaceship flying through space. From the freefall to the planet to the space battles, it is really breathtaking. Most of the major characters were given a well-enough screen time as well their own great moments in the films. Especially for Sulu, who is a representative of all Asia (my race), have his time of awesomeness in the film. Two characters that were my favorite picks were Karl Urban as McCoy and Zachary (Sylar) Quinto as Spock. Learning from Wrath of Khan, McCoy is to Kirk as Ron is to Harry and Urban did a great job in providing the chemistry between Pine and himself, being the straight serious man to Kirk's wild libido ala The Odd Couple. Spock had the added advantage of character development, having being born of a Vulcan father and a Earth mother where he is tormented and bullied by his own kind. Thus trying to prove to them and himself his own capability and intelligence despite his "disability".

When you have Eric (f*cking) Bana in your film, you know its gonna be awesome.....
Except for the Hulk.... I take that back..

Though the cast performance are not entirely brilliant, it is chiselled and crafted well. The humor of the film can offbalance the film for a while and the references to the original series can range from subtle to completely obvious. Much like Wrath of Khan, I definately enjoyed this and had a complete warp-speed blast. Something that the old hardcore fans can relish on and for the new fans to be introduced. Thus I rate it:

4 out of 5 stars

Its funny how Star Trek geeks are now considered cool again and yet Star Wars geeks still remain..... what is the opposite of cool?

Mini Reviews - Rambo

Rambo

Rambo (Rambo IV)

HOLY F*CK!!

I mean HOLY F*CK!!!

When you have "Rambo" for a title of a movie, you better f*ckin live up to it! And god, this is a RAMBO movie! F*ckin Stallone is old as hell and he still ripping people's throats out! It pretty much has a simple story and there are some two-dimensional characters, some that can be annoying because of their intentions. I mean why would you want to help out the people in war-torn Burma?!

But man, the violence has just MAXED OUT! Gore is through the roof and blood is everywhere! Its not for the faint of heart. If you're not the kind of person who freaks out by the sight of blood, this film is absolutely NOT for you. And the f*ckin last battle scene in the film is the entire PAYOFF! Soldiers get mutilated in every pieces and parts and every organ in the human body literally explodes. AND ITS SO FREAKIN AWESOME!!!

It's also a little short at around 85 mins. If you're wimpy or piss-pants to look at anything gory, avoid this movie. But for those who love Rambo and love hardcore old-school action films, GO AND SEE THIS MOVIE!

Mini Reviews - Waltz With Bashir

Vals Im Bashir (Waltz with Bashir)

Greatly animated and artistically engaging. It is an honest documentary, but doesn't feel like a documentary, but more to a cinematic narrative. The interviews felt more like conversations, blended into the narrative and depicting the events of each soldiers in the Lebanon War. A great film to watch.

My Top Ten: Most Favorite Space Movies

Its that time of the month where I give my Top Ten on ANYTHING!

This month's theme of the month is the new Star Trek movie. After 10 films and a couple of years of absence, the Star Trek franchise comes back with a reboot and prequel treatment. I'm not entirely a Star Trek fan. Though I have seen some of the films and TV episodes. But even for someone who is not a "Trekkie", I'm so looking forward watching this film, based on what everyone have said about it. So on this list, I will be counting down my most favorite space films.

To qualify as an entry, the film has be set in space or in other planets and cannot be set mostly on Earth. So if a film spends %60 on Earth and 40% in space, it does not qualify.

Remember these are listed as most favorite, not the best. It's like my view on Spider-man and Batman. Batman is a better (and probably the best) superhero, but Spider-man is my favorite. In the end, its MY list.

10.
PITCH BLACK

At first I didn't expect much from this movie, but after watching this in the theater, I love the whole concept, setting and even the characters. While the plot is kind of typical horror monster film, it is saved by the characters, element of suspense and even the horror factor. You really feel that no one is safe from the creatures, except for the main male protagonist. I mean he is one cool male protagonist. If you're f*ckin Vin Diesel with night-vision eyes, you're pretty much invincible. And there is nothing more scarier than being alone in the dark in the desert, surrounded by creatures who live in the dark. They really shouldn't have made that "Chronicles of Riddick" movie.

9.
VOICES OF A DISTANT STAR

Its really much a short film, but a well-animated, well-directed, well-emotional driven short film. Makoto Shinkai is pretty much named "The next Hayao Miyazaki" and you can pretty much see why. His art design, animation and timing so fit the emotion in all of the sequences and the two characters. And its really a sad film to watch. A little synopsis tells of a young couple separated by a space war and the girl is drafted in to pilot a mecha and fight, while the boy is left behind on Earth. The battleground is light-years away and the only thing they can communicate through is by cell-phone texting, in which their messages takes a real long time to recieve. The fact that Makoto animates the ENTIRE film really amazes me and should be seen by animation lovers.

8.
STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN

I will admit I have just seen this somewhat recently, considering I'm not entirely a Star Trek fan. And I can totally see why this is so loved by most. Some parts in the film are timeless and some aren't, but anyone who is not a fan or don't have a knowledge of the franchise can go in and enjoy this movie. Its half of Star Trek and half of a self-contained movie. The only thing you can explore on this movie is from an episode of the original series, "Space Seed". There are some corny stuffs that doesn't ruin the plot and its a film that is both serious and fun.

7.
COWBOY BEBOP: THE MOVIE

I know I'm cheating on this, but you should know that the entire film is set on MARS, not Earth. It looks and feels like Earth, but its not. And hell, what can I say about an animated film of my most favorite anime show? Spike is cool, Faye is hot, Ed is weird and Jet is Jet. Also plot is good, badguy is badass, other girl is also hot, music is damn cool and action is awesome. Again space battles with fighter ships set to jazz/bebop music = freakin awesome.

6.
TOTAL RECALL

FYI, the most half of the film takes place on Mars. What I liked about this is that it is a hybrid of your typical Schwarzenegger action and a grand sci-fi adventure with a tiny hint of complexity. And I mean tiny. But what do you get from a typical Schwarzenegger film? You get over-the-top asskicking action with cheesy one-liners. And the film's vision of the future was very interesting to look at from the X-ray Screens to the Johnny Cabs. There are many great moments and I could watch this over and over again.

5.
2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY

Going into this first time, it was slow in the beginning, it REALLY picks up as it goes along. And who could ever doubt Stanley Kubrick? His name really defines art. Looking at space in a whole new different and epic way is as breathtaking as ever. Such magnificant cinematography and composition. Its like watching and listening a full-set orchestra event, protraying something as epic as space. And hell, HAL is creepy as f*ck.

4.
SPACEBALLS

Choosing this over 2001: A Space Odyssey? Hell yeah! As much as I love Kubrick, I f*ckin worship Mel Brooks. And its so hard to choose between this as "History of the World: Part I" as my most favorite Mel Brooks film. But this film is just so f*ckin funny, its among my favorite comedies on my list. The gags and writing are brilliant, witty and totally absurd. Such great performances from Rick Moranis and Mel Brooks and the jokes just never get old. It is a parody of everything sci-fi from Star Wars to Star Trek to Alien.

3.
ALIENS

As much as I love the original Alien, this one is just amazingly awesome. Probably I'm more favorable of a fast-paced action than the slow, claustophobic atmosphere. And it is just nice to see a strong powering female protagonist, enabling to take on probably the most vicious and horrific creatures in space. She is developed even more in this film and it's just awesome to see her doing a one-man rescue into the alien colony. And her fight with the Queen in a mecha.... OH YEAH!

2.
STAR WARS EPISODE V: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

I said to myself, "one episode from a franchise", so I picked the most favorite out of the series. And it is so obvious that The Empire Strikes Back is the one. While A New Hope sets up the entire mythology, Empire gives more into the story and goes into darker territories. The space battles, such as the one in Hoth, were so great to look at and the characters were developed more. And there are new and interesting characters introduced when I first saw it, like Yoday and Boba Fett. Darth Vader is still a badass to be feared (if you could ignore the prequels) and his revelation to Luke is still one of most memorable scenes to everyone and even to me.

1.
WALL-E

Not only it is my most favorite space/sci-fi film of all time, but it is among my most favorite films in general. There is something epic of how one small robot's love with a female counterpart could affect the entire galaxy and humanity. I'm a grown man and everytime I see Wall-E doing one small action, I just go "AWWWWWW".. He (and everyone already confirmed its a he) is such a geniune and lovable character and the great thing about him is that he can't communicate through structured and clear language, yet you know him entirely just by his movement, quirks and behavior. He's a robot Charlie Chaplin and this film is his City Lights. As much as it is harmless and fun, it does provide such a grim look into the future such as corperation, human health and knowledge and appreciation to humanity and our planet. Though the biggest focus is the chemistry between Wall-E and his girl, EVE and I couldn't think of such lovable couples as those two. You really wish they can never be torned apart. Like the Dark Knight, it transcend from its initial genre and became something more than that. Hey, you can't do no wrong from Pixar.

So thats my Top 10. What's your opinion?

Mini Reviews - Revolutionary Road

Revolutionary Road

Revolutionary Road

After seeing this movie, you'll think twice about marriage. Its a downright beautiful and harsh portrait of a married couple in the 1950s, but in a way, not entirely mind-blowing. Leo and Kate are back from the love boat of Titanic and still give you a couple destined for no happy ending. The performances are strong and the film is well shot. The story slows down at the middle, but really picks up near the end. Its recommended, but its a tough film to watch.

Mini Reviews - The Spirit

The Spirit

The Spirit

Visually strong, but plot, characters and consistency falls weak. Its a terrible mess, creating a cartoonish action/performance in a dark and serious tone world. The entire cast gave such a appalling performance especially by Samuel L Jackson and Scarlett Johansson. I don't know if its meant to be too much of a comic book or less of a Saturday morning cartoon.

Mini Reviews - Twilight

Twilight

Twilight

Edward Cullen is a 15-year-old girl's perspective of a vampire. Dashing, hunky, rich, plays the f*ckin piano and even shines like diamond in sunlight. For all I know, his blood taste like strawberries and rainbows. And when you have a vampire that shines like diamonds, its utter bullsh*t.

There is nothing special from this so-called hyped-up franchise. All the characters are bland as Hayden Christensen. Story is just oh-hum. Pacing goes from tiresome to laziness. The relationship between Eddie and Bella just so unbelievable in a vampire love fantasy. Even if I was born without a shaft, I wouldn't find this film a bit interesting. Want a better vampire romance film of 2008, watch "Let The Right One In", a far f*ckin better story.

I mean serious.. Shiny Diamond Eddie in Sunlight..... BULLSH*T!!

An enjoyable and LSD-ridden hyperactive film, based on the classic anime show, Speed Racer. It is corny as hell and still fun to watch, which is what anime is all about. Mini Reviews - Starting with Let the Right One in

I figured that since I'm watching alot of movies at an alarming rate, I'll be giving you mini reviews of movies I watched each day.

Starting with

Låt den Rätte Komma In (Let the Right One in)

Låt den Rätte Komma In (Let the Right One in)

A truly haunting and original vampire tale that will leave you a sinking feeling inside you. A dark tale of innocence, friendship, love and horror between a young human and a young vampire. Not to be confused with Twilight and this film is definitely better than that.
